My name is Becca and I am applying to be one of your Junior Global Health Representatives! I graduated from Queen’s University in 2017 with a BSc in Life Sciences. During my final two years at Queen’s I was involved with an organization called “Queen’s Health Outreach (www.qho.ca)”, which is an entirely student-run NGO focused on peer-to-peer health education. Through this initiative I was able to engage with youth, both in the local Kingston community as well as in Georgetown, Guyana, through interactive programming on various health topics. Sessions were tailored to each specific community and their needs, ranging from STIs, to healthy relationships, to mental illness and bullying. Connecting with youth of various cultures and socioeconomic statuses, all about similar and sometimes taboo health topics was an incredible learning experience.
I think it is imperative that we, as upcoming health care professionals, think critically about the ways in which we conduct ourselves as global citizens, as well as recognize and enact our privilege to initiate positive change. I would be extremely grateful to work as a Global Health Representative for our faculty and have the opportunity to engage in conversation with likeminded individuals surrounding sustainable and equitable ways in which we can work towards a healthier world!
